What is an HVAC System?
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems provide residential and commercial buildings with heating and cooling. HVAC systems can be installed in single-family homes, offices, warehouses, retail stores, etc. These systems work by collecting fresh air from the outdoors and converting them into indoor air to provide a better quality of indoor air. In the process of collecting and converting outdoor air through the ducts, the filters in the HVAC systems will trap impurities in the air including dust, smoke, airborne bacteria, moisture, carbon dioxide, etc., to ensure that only clean air gets into the building.
How does an HVAC system work?
HVAC systems mainly serve three functions, cooling, heating, and ventilating. All these functions work together to ensure that your home or office building always has clean air. HVAC systems can be broken down into heating systems or furnaces, ventilation systems, and air conditioners. A typical HVAC system has nine parts that you must be familiar with:
Air Return: Air return is the starting point of the air ventilation circle in your HVAC system. It sucks in outdoor air, passes it through the filter to be processed and into the main system. If air returns are not properly cleaned frequently, dust and debris can build up in the filters over time.
Filter: The filter is the second point of contact the sucked in the air has with the HVAC system. It is at this point that air particles and dust are filtered out. Failure to regularly clean or change filters will lead to a buildup of dust and particles which can contaminate the air.
Exhaust Outlets: This is particular to heating systems or furnaces. An exhaust outlet is required to let out exhaust or smoke from your heating system to prevent it from getting into your air ducts.
Ducts: The ducts are the channels in which air passes through, either hot or cold. Try cleaning your air ducts every 2-5 years and other debris from building up in them.
Electrical Elements: These are the wires, batteries, breakers, etc. that ensure your HVAC system is working fine. Electrical problems are the first likely problems to pop up.
Outdoor Unit: This is the most visible part of the HVAC system. It is where the fan that produces airflow is found. Try to keep this unit clean to avoid debris buildup inside.
Compressor: The compressor is an important part of an air conditioning system that converts refrigerant from gas to liquid and passes it to the coils. Compressor failure is often the cause of many air conditioning failures. Always run a routine maintenance check to ensure that all is in order.
Coils: This is another part of the outdoor unit. It is responsible for cooling the air as it passes through.
Blower: The blower sucks in warm air through the unit’s main section to ensure seamless airflow through the system.
